Oriental Despotism?

Alexander moved ahead to Zadracarta, a town in Hyrcania, where he received a number of high-ranking Persian envoys, including the general, Artabazus, who had fought with Darius at Gaugamela, aided him in his initial flight, and remained loyal to him even in the wake of Bessus’ coup. Alexander rewarded Artabazus for his devotion to the former king by appointing him governor of Bessus’ home satrapy of Bactria. Alexander also received representatives from the 1500 Greek mercenaries who had fought with Darius to the last. He told their delegates that he would accept nothing except unconditional surrender. Greek soldiers, he argued, who had fought for Persia against their own homeland were ‘little better than criminals …’ (Arrian, III.23). The mercenaries accepted his terms and were thereafter incorporated into the Macedonian army.
